Appledore is a lovely, picturesque fishing village with a long maritime history and a stunning selection of self catering accommodation. Appledore Arts Festival in June and The Book Festival in late September are great events in the calendar. The coast along here is wonderful too. Perched on the estuary where the River Torridge meets the River Taw and with breathtaking views of nearby Instow, you can watch the local fisherman land their catch, while enjoying a Hockings ice cream. Not only does the fishing go back hundreds of years, but it was well known for boat building and repairs. While sitting on the harbour and watching all the activity, why not buy some superb fish and chips or participate in a spot of "crabbing". There are a variety of circular and pleasant walks along the sunny, south facing quay and along the river past galleries and local shops towards Bideford and Westward Ho! Along the way, pop into one of the many public houses and restaurants, many of which offer a wide range of local seafood. There are also many art galleries and local shops to explore within quiet traffic-free cobbled streets.
Perfect for cyclists and ramblers, the Tarka Trail is a series of footpaths and cycle-paths around North Devon, with over 30 miles of the Tarka Trail available to cyclists between Braunton and Meeth, using the old railways of North Devon.The surrounding area also has much to offer. Within driving distance is Atlantic Village outlet shopping centre, Tapeley Park, Instow, The Big Sheep, Dartington Crystal, Clovelly, Bucks Mills, The Milky Way adventure park and open-air pannier markets. Just a short hop over the Torridge is the large market town of Barnstaple, with all high street conveniences, cinema, theatre, museums and nightlife. From Barnstaple one is in easy reach of many magnificent North Devon blue-flag beaches including Croyde, Woolacombe, Saunton Sands, Braunton Burrows and Putsborough; all famous surf spots. The Eden Project in Cornwall, can also visited within a day.
